Is Everyone In This Wurld a Winner?

Shop Wurld is a new Website that allows a person to shop online and donate at the same time. It is pyramid type of business model, where you sign up under an individual and they get a portion of your proceeds along with their sponsor and so on. Since the company is located and designed in Saratoga Springs, I thought that I would post about the design.

shopwurld

the ShopWurld design was created by MWH Design, while the development was done by Web Valve, both are located at 480 Broadway in Saratoga Springs. I know very little about either company, but I would bet they are one and the same. MWH seems to be the real deal and I’m sure that I will write something up on them soon.

The design of ShopWurld is nice and professional, easy to navigate, and sells the product in a quiet way. Even the text is well written. This raises my curiosity about both of these two companies. See for yourself www.shopwurld.com.

This is only a design review, it doesn’t mean I recommending ShopWurld.

The Future of Media is Interactive

If your looking for a company that can do almost anything online, from websites, animation, games, and video, all with a sense of humor, this could be your ticket.

Future Media was started by Colin Baird in the early nineties. Yes that was caveman time if your counting in web years. They are located in the old Elks Building on 75 Woodlawn Avenue.

Back in 1993 Web development was really a geek process, mostly engineers playing around with code. The first generation web developers have moved onto other jobs or cease to exist anymore. Future Media has not only stayed in business, but has flourished in the process. Unlike System1, who was the original hot web development company in Saratoga Springs, who went down in flames about eight years ago, Colin has guided his company into the next generation of web development. This type of maneuver took forethought and some sort of business acumen to guide the company through such fast changing times.

This has left Future Media doing some of the most complex web development in the area. Integrating Video, imagery, animations and database information into an interactive format. Naturally that type of work comes at a cost. When costs are that high, you work with large companies, and their typical clients are Japanese electronic firms. Really, that seems to be it. If you look at their portfolio they show other projects, but it certainly can’t be consistent work for them.

The Albany AdClub is the only local website that I could find that they completed. You can find it at http://www.albanyadclub.com/

So here we have another Saratoga Springs firm that has little bearing on the Saratoga Design world. Companies like this really like the lifestyle and environment of working in Saratoga Springs but they certainly are not supported by the businesses in the area.

Future Media has really good designers as well as developers. My advice is to walk into a downtown retail store and offer to create a free webstore for them. In exchange they could get a free pair of trousers.

Shannon Rose to Where

If you judge a company by how long they have been in business, Shannon-Rose Design should be the largest company in the design industry. They claim to have been in business for over fifteen years, building a company that services small businesses and multinational companies. You hear this a lot.

Initially their offices were on Broadway, but now are located several block up near the corner of Church and Clinton. Looking at the office, it would be nice if they moved the garbage cans away from the front door. Odd that I should have to mention this.

Through the years, they have morphed from a typesetting house, pre-press house, design studio, and now apparently a web development studio. The website – http://www.shannonrose.com/flash.html – which is quite nice by the way, states that they currently have only 4 employees. I believe they have more than that.

So where does this company stand in the graphic design seen in Saratoga Springs. They seem to be a regional design firm, staying within the Lake Placid to Albany NY area. Shannon-Rose holds a unique place in the city, since they are not huge like Palio or just a one or two person shop, they are an odd size. I will focus on some of their local work.

Menges and Curtis seems to use Shannon-Rose for their work. They did the logo and packaging for some product they probably just stick their name on. The design is nice and is very consistent in style to what you would expect a store like Menges & Curtis should sell. They did a nice job of forming an identity for the pharmacy.

Of course you don’t see the logo much at the store itself. Just on the packaging of their cream.

I have seen this identity carried out on the Website and the local weekly Saratoga Today. I don’t know if Shannon-Rose Design did the ads, but they do continue the design even though it is only a black and white ad.  In conclusion, most local business have quite bad packaging, but Shannon-Rose did a pretty nice job for Menges & Curtis.

Another local client is Saratoga Performing Arts Center. I had to stumble on this one by finding their name at the bottom of the site. The site is well designed and but there is a lot of stuff. It is well organized, but they seem to want to do to many things at once.

I don’t know if Shannon-Rose Did the logo, but I hope not. One of the interesting things, but also one of the more confusing, is the rolling calendar halfway down the page. This is pretty complicated stuff to build, and I wonder if they actually did it themselves.

Still the main calendar is where things really come together. it includes a full calendar, music, video, and all the information on each performer than you could ask for. Things move, and shuffle, but not in a bad way, you can still find you way around. The website is a very interesting attempt to do a lot of things in a very usable way. Overall it is a good website but for an arts venue, the SPAC website is almost phenomenal. I actually went and looked at other musical venues to see.

So where does that put Shannon-Rose in the Saratoga Springs design world? There isn’t a lot of local work on their site, so it is hard to tell the extent of it. But, I have heard their name related to a lot of design work locally.
